National Fisheries Institute Statement on Coronavirus on Squid Packaging in China

WASHINGTON, DC September 21, 2020 — Reports from China say coronavirus was found on the packaging of squid imported to that country from Russia. With this in mind, it is important to understand that all major public health organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration, continue to emphasize to buyers and consumers that there is no evidence of COVID-19 being spread by food or food packaging.

Food safety authorities globally are confident in the food supply chain and the World Health Organization says testing of food or food surfaces for the virus is not recommended.

Seafood is a safe and wholesome food with nutritional benefits that contribute to a strong immune system. Seafood remains an important part of a healthy diet.
