Dr. Oz Gets It Wrong On Fish And Mercury

June 1, 2010 Washington, D.C. – The National Fisheries Institute (NFI) is publicly challenging Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of the Dr. Oz Show, to correct a number of errors and distortions that he made concerning fish, nutrition and mercury on a recent episode of his show.  Earlier this year, NFI sent several letters to Dr. Oz pointing out, among others, the following errors contained in a program that was televised nationally on January 26, 2010 and is scheduled to be re-run on June 3, 2010:

  • Dr. Oz told his viewers that mercury in fish was a concern for the general population, an assertion that is clearly contradicted by the advice of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that says, "for most people, the risk from mercury by eating fish and shellfish is not a health concern."
  • Dr. Oz also incorrectly asserted that the methyl mercury found in seafood enters the food chain because of man-made pollution, when in fact those trace amounts are actually from sources like underwater volcanic activity.  A scientific fact recently buttressed by two rulings in the California courts that found that the vast majority of mercury in seafood was “naturally occurring.”
  • Dr. Oz also interviewed activist Dr. Jane Hightower about her mercury-focused practice and her pet diagnosis of “fish fog,” but nowhere did he mention that there have been no cases of mercury poisoning, as the result of the normal consumption of commercial seafood., found in peer-reviewed medical journals in the U.S.

Despite repeatedly bringing this to his attention, Dr. Oz refused to substantively answer NFI’s questions and instead responded with a letter from the program’s attorney

NFI joins a growing chorus of critics who are finding fault with many of the doctor’s methods.  An April 2010 profile in the New York Times Magazine observed that the pressures of producing a daily television show had led Dr. Oz to dispense “a chaotic bazaar of advice, not all of it equally reliable and important.”  Another article that appeared that same month in the Chicago Tribune concluded that, “Oz's ventures also offer advice unsupported by science.”

For more than 60 years, the National Fisheries Institute (NFI) and its members have provided American families with the variety of sustainable seafood essential to a healthy diet. For more information visit: www.AboutSeafood.com.

When we start letting the government and FDA tell us what to eat, we'll be a doomed society... Oh, wait, that already happened? Crap.
One should look into the history of the FDA. They have allowed companies to use caustic chemicals into products (for people) that were manufactured by large companies in lieu of "a Grandfather Clause". These chemicals are put on our bodies AND in carwash solutions, and in creams, and used to embalm the dead. These caustic chemicals used in and on cars, are a main ingrediant in most human products. Animals are protected from the use of these chemicals in products. Animal shampoo, conditioner and other products are safer for humans. Animals are protected by law by caustic chemicals, thereby safer for humans. Dr Oz exposes things the public has been blinded to for years, exposing many big money Corporations that have kept these very things from becoming public.. Research reveals any chemical we absorb be it oral or absorbed throught the skin, will have after effects.. Seems the big Corps would like to see Dr Oz off the air. Gee too late. He now has a following. And then look who believed in him..OPrah...
Dr. Oz has been always on par with what science is proving. Fuck the FDA, and all the companies that pressure them. Long live Oz!
Like one person rightly commented in here,....i think you need to get a job and leave the man that has helped a whole lot of people in this country,i think you might be jealous of his fame and think you can get a 3 mins fame by trying to portray him as someone who is feeding us with wrong information....he has helped me and my family all over the world, merely by watching his EDUCATIONAL programmes and applying some and most to our ways of life now, Have you stopped for a moment to check yourself and ask.....what have i contributed to this country or to the world to make it a better place to live in... This is a HUMBLE man who does not see what he is doing as being famous but just in there to help us all live a much better life.... Do us all a favour, get a better job and leave the Gentleman alone. Thanks and God Bless
The comment was that almost all people are not effected by mercury. The key words being (ALMOST ALL) What about the people that the mercury could effect? That's why Dr.Oz feels that he needs to make everyone aware of what may be in the fish that we eat. Way to go Dr.Oz I applaud your efforts to get the word out. I believe that he is correct with his information and that there is always the possible cover up about mercury. Leave Dr.Oz alone already. He is a great doctor willing and ready to help anyone that needs his professional words of advise.
You've got to be kidding me? You are quoting the FDA as a source of useful info? Who are you kidding? The only fish oil to consume is Nordic Naturals and Carlson's. Wanna know why? Cuz it comes from NORWAY. Where there are restrictions on the pollution of their water. They can't dump junk. How's that for a rule? FDA. WTF? and by the way, mercury is one of the causes in Autism too. Vaccines baby all loaded with that lovely metal called mercury. Mental illness linked to those lovely amalgams that our dentists packed our cavities with back in the day. FDA approved I'd bet.
Some people may be getting too much mercury and any reminder of such is a benefit to the people. Mercury is in the long life light bulbs that are energy savers also. Dr. Jerry Schalski
What is great about him is that he gives a lot of free medical advice, where when I go to a doctor they only want to address one issue at a time. Dr. oz also saved my cousins life last week when his wife gave him aspirin when he thought he was having a heart attack. He did have a heart attack but the hospital said the aspirin saved him and asked his wife how she knew to give him 4. She said she learned it from Dr. Oz.
