While the hand wringing about whether tilapia is good for you continues unabated in the mainstream press one of the most respected medical research institutes in the world is saying consumers should not give up tilapia—despite the fact that one researcher has publically likened it to hamburger, bacon and doughnuts.
A pair of R.D.’s who write the Nutrition-Wise column for the Mayo Clinic ask the question, should you give up tilapia based on overblown news reports and answer it with a resounding “NO!”
One writes, “I’m going to continue to eat fish- at least twice weekly. I’m going to choose a variety of fatty fish—including tilapia.”
So, let’s see-- we have 16 doctors authoring an open letter that publicly disputes the sensational hamburger, bacon and doughnuts comparison and now the Mayo Clinic is weighing in.
There may be a debate about the impact of the omega-3 / omega-6 ratio but there is no longer a debate about how this story has been presented. Sensational sound-bite-science is being put in its place.
Maybe your not getting enough fiber in your diet! I've noticed that it makes a great deal of difference for me & I have IBS in which I'm prone to the problems.
You also could have lactose problems if your using a lot of dairy.
I recent had tilapia and I don't believe the hype about it being as fattening as burgers and donuts. However, I am having serious stomach problems. I am bloating so badly that I look pregnant. Normally, I would just discount this but I have spoken to two other people who have had the same reaction. They had eaten it on a different day and it was not the one I cooked so I was wondering if anyone else has had this symptom happen to them after eating tilapia?
Hi-
Glad you are still enjoying tilapia now and again. But sorry about your tummy! I don't believe there is anything about tilapia specifically that would cause bloating. It may be something you ate with the fish, like a sauce. Or it may be totally unrelated to what you ate. Bloating sometimes is probably normal, but if you have regular distention of your belly, you should see your doctor.
