MyPlate Recommendation

The United States Department of Agriculture says twice a week, make seafood the protein on your plate. Increase the amount and variety of seafood consumed by choosing seafood in place of some meat and poultry.

Fish tales

I wasn't feeling the best yesterday, at least not feeling well enough to cook.  OK, maybe I just wanted to watch Top Chef Masters in peace.  Whatever the excuse, the fish tacos I had planned didn't come to be.  I'll likely make them this weekend instead.  In the meantime, we'll surely get a good dose of seafood tonight at the Waikiki Aquarium Summer Concert Series.  Each concert in the series features signature menu items from a different Honolulu restaurant, and tonight's food will come from BluWater Grill

Some aquariums are in the business of making lists of fish to avoid based on their view of sustainability.  The doom and gloom can get overwhelming for some.  But good news from nearly 20 international scientists...according to the best-available data on the status of marine fisheries to date, the outlook is hopeful.  Sound management has, and can continue to, contribute to the rebuilding of fisheries.  Another apocalyptic fish tale put in to perspective.

Hey, i just sent this email to the NOAA and also printed and sent a hard copy to their address, check out http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/cyberfish/

Hello, NOAA !!

The CNN news today had a fascinating story- - -

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/08/03/stimulus.nets/index.html#cnnSTCVideo

about stimulus funds being used for fisherman to retrieve lost nets in Puget Sound. We all know too well that stray fishing nets are and have been a
total blight on fisheries around the world. It would be great to see the NOAA take a proactive role in this remarkable process and spread this program to
a national level.

Thank you,
David Arnson

About Jennifer

I am a registered dietitian with the National Fisheries Institute, so fish is my nutrition forte. I earned my BA in Communication from Southwestern University, just outside of Austin, TX. During college, one of my very favorite evening outings was a leisurely trip to the grocery market. My passion for food was undeniable, so I combined both of my interests by earning my MS in Nutrition Communication from Tufts University in Boston, MA. As well as my Registered Dietitian (RD) credential through the University of Delaware.

Beyond reading scientific studies about docosahexaenoic acid and selenium, I love to entertain, travel, watch reality TV, grill outdoors, and go to spin class. I live in Kailua, HI on the island of Oahu where my husband serves as a US Marine Corps JAG.

People in Hawaii eat more fish and shellfish than average, but over 80 percent of typical Americans don't eat seafood at least twice per week. Doctors and dietitians like me say that's the goal, so BlogAboutSeafood is here to show you just what plenty of seafood looks like in an RD's real-life diet.
