MyPyramid says most meat and poultry choices should be lean or low-fat. Fish, nuts, and seeds contain healthy oils, so choose these foods frequently instead of meat or poultry.
I'm finally ALL moved in to my new kitchen. I spent a good third of my weekend in there, organizing, cooking, and sometimes just staring at the stocked fridge and pantry with appreciation.

Hawaii is really close to Japan. This is something I tend to forget because it feels very much like America here. But we are on a tiny island, just a stone's throw away from Asia. I was reminded of this fact when we happened upon a Japanese phenomenon right here in our own neighborhood - the revolving sushi bar. Invented by a 23-year-old Japanese man in 1968, the concept of sushi speeding by diners' tables on a "kaiten" (basically a conveyer belt) is wildly popular in Japan. Genki Sushi - the original kaiten-style sushi
We have an address! It's been a while since Lloyd and I have had a real, stand alone address, but tomorrow we're getting the key for the beautiful unit we'll be calling home here in Hawaii. We were on the fence between buying and renting, but in the end renting won out because a) we won't be here long enough for buying to make sense, b) the task of renovating a home could put a serious kink in the carefree island weekends we have in mind, and c) this place was too lovely to pass up. It's been a couple days since I first opened my Inbox after my wedding time off, and I'm happy to report that my outstanding emails are now in the single digits. I'm actually happy to be back - my schedule (to account for the five hour time difference) has shifted from 7am - 3pm, so I get to work on the projects I'm passionate about and still have a few hours in the afternoon to enjoy the beautiful Hawaiian sun and sand.
First, the new year - Lloyd and I shared New Year's Eve dinner at DC Coast with over 20 members of his family who just arrived in town for our wedding. For my appetizer, I had a very yummy tuna ceviche, served in - a sign of things to come - half a coconut.
I am a registered dietitian with the National Fisheries Institute, so fish is my nutrition forte. I earned my BA in Communication from Southwestern University, just outside of Austin, TX. During college, one of my very favorite evening outings was a leisurely trip to the grocery market. My passion for food was undeniable, so I combined both of my interests by earning my MS in Nutrition Communication from Tufts University in Boston, MA. As well as my Registered Dietitian (RD) credential through the University of Delaware.
Beyond reading scientific studies about docosahexaenoic acid and selenium, I love to entertain, travel, watch reality TV, grill outdoors, and go to spin class. I live in Kailua, HI on the island of Oahu where my husband serves as a US Marine Corps JAG.
People in Hawaii eat more fish and shellfish than average, but over 80 percent of typical Americans don't eat seafood at least twice per week. Doctors and dietitians like me say that's the goal, so BlogAboutSeafood is here to show you just what plenty of seafood looks like in an RD's real-life diet.
