MyPyramid says most meat and poultry choices should be lean or low-fat. Fish, nuts, and seeds contain healthy oils, so choose these foods frequently instead of meat or poultry.

  • I am finally back in DC after back-to-back trips to Boston (work) and Austin (play).  The play part involved attending the 2008 Austin City Limits Music Festival with my whole family.  The festival was full of a lot of dust, a lot of heat, and a lot of people, but also a lot of amazing music.  I'm hoping to return next year.  While in town, I ate at several of my very favorite restaurants from college, including the site of mine and my fiancé's first date, Mother's Café.  Mother's is a vegetarian

Last night I got my fish fix at a famous Boston-based seafood restaurant - one that brings back warm memories of meals shared with visiting family when I lived here for graduate school.  In fact, all warm memories I have from Boston are of me being indoors in some capacity.  This is a magnificent town, but chilly already!

  • Today, one of my colleagues dropped by my desk to share a selection from her personal cookbook collection, Tin Fish Gourmet by Barbara-jo McIntosh.  The more I flip through it, the lower her odds of ever getting it back become.  As the description reads, "These mouthwatering recipes feature all your favorite canned seafoods; from salmon, tuna, and clams, to sardines, anchovies, and caviar.

  • Being from Texas, Hurricane Ike definitely hit close to home. My family lives in north Texas, so they only got a little wind and rain. But my fiancé's family lives in and around Houston, so they got a lot of wind and rain.  Everyone is safe, but the city will be recovering for a while and life is by no means back to normal.  For example, this week they have to learn how to navigate around with absolutely no stoplights.

About Jennifer

I am a registered dietitian with the National Fisheries Institute, so fish is my nutrition forte. I earned my BA in Communication from Southwestern University, just outside of Austin, TX. During college, one of my very favorite evening outings was a leisurely trip to the grocery market. My passion for food was undeniable, so I combined both of my interests by earning my MS in Nutrition Communication from Tufts University in Boston, MA. As well as my Registered Dietitian (RD) credential through the University of Delaware.

Beyond reading scientific studies about docosahexaenoic acid and selenium, I love to entertain, travel, watch reality TV, grill outdoors, and go to spin class. I live in Kailua, HI on the island of Oahu where my husband serves as a US Marine Corps JAG.

People in Hawaii eat more fish and shellfish than average, but over 80 percent of typical Americans don't eat seafood at least twice per week. Doctors and dietitians like me say that's the goal, so BlogAboutSeafood is here to show you just what plenty of seafood looks like in an RD's real-life diet.
