Canned Tuna

Canned tuna is an easy and versatile pre-cooked fish that is loved by people on the go as well as those who have time to savor their food. It comes in a variety of can and pouch sizes that make serving food for a crowd or individual portions easy. Tuna packed in water has a lighter, fresher taste while tuna packed in oil has a richer mouth-feel. In either case, drain the tuna thoroughly before adding it to recipes and use a fork to flake it to a consistency you like.

Canned tuna adds more protein and heartiness to traditionally lighter fare, such as salads and sandwiches. Classic variations of tuna salad often combine canned tuna with mayo and chopped or grated vegetables, such as celery, carrots, or onion. Serve tuna salad as a sandwich filling or on top of a fresh leafy salad. For variety, mix water-packed canned tuna with diced bell pepper, celery, green onions and chickpeas. Toss with a lemon-flavored vinaigrette and serve with a side of greens.

Casseroles are another classic preparation of canned tuna. Personalize tuna casserole by adding your favorite combination of vegetables, herbs, and spices to the basic casserole ingredients of tuna and noodles. Or try adding tuna packed in olive oil, capers, and olives to your favorite jarred or homemade tomato sauce. This variation of "Pasta Puttanesca" is delicious served over penne.
