On Columbus Day I did a little journeying myself. After a harrowing flight over the Pacific
(OK, it was smooth as could be and I slept most of the way) I'm back on the
mainland for a little over a week - visiting colleagues for a few days in
Washington, DC and then attending the 2009
American Dietetic Association Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (ADA
FNCE) in Denver. Lloyd and I had a fun
Monday night we had our (semi-) regular girls' dinner, and the
hostess made shrimp and veggie kebabs. My
biggest entertaining hurdle is finding recipes that I can make ahead, and
kebabs are ingenious. Even cleverer, my friend
enlisted her husband to do the actually grilling. So her hostessing wasn't interrupted for even
five minutes.
I am home in Hawaii
after a couple hiccups along the way. My
cell phone broke and my checked luggage went missing. But now I am back up and running - I have my
home phone to tide me over until I get a new cell phone, and my luggage was
found and delivered right to my door.
I am back home in Hawaii
today. I was telling my colleague that I
can't decide if the trip to and from Washington
is shockingly long or shockingly short.
But I think I'm leaning towards the later. It's amazing I can wake up two days in a row,
nearly half the world apart.
Upon my return there were no groceries. So after work today, in between many loads of
laundry, I am going to plan some meals and get over to the commissary. Here's what I'm thinking so far for the week...
Last Tuesday I got on a plane in balmy Honolulu
and (some minor delays and a red-eye later) got off in icy Washington, DC. I'm back for work - one of four trips I'll make
this year to attend meetings and spend face time with my
colleagues. Except for the despicable
weather, it's been a valuable and interesting week. The big meeting I attended and gave comments
at was of the 2010 Dietary
Guidelines Advisory Committee. These
are the important 12 people that will set nutrition recommendations for the
I have mentioned before that the stresses of wedding
planning are all worth it to me for the fabulously fun opportunity to pick the
food. Today I am excited to report that
our caterer has officially been selected and the menu is shaping up
nicely. Here is a sneak preview of the
seafood selections…
